There was this time after I had gone through a couple of not-very-healthy relationships where I learned this really important tool that would help me find success in every area of my life.
Someone had said to me after a breakup when I sat there, tears welling in my eyes over a Starbucks latte, “You need to make a list of everything you want in a relationship, and put a big star next to the non-negotiables.” I nodded, still stinging, but wanting more for myself. “And then put it on your refrigerator.”
My list started out with things like “has a job”, “is NOT going through a divorce”, but over time, grew to include things like “has a relationship with God”, and “is passionate”.
Eventually, after some time single, as if the list was a prayer put out there every time I entered my kitchen, this perfect-for-me relationship found me. 🙂
We can do this with our work. It’s important to put in writing the things we want to fill our lives with, including clients/projects/jobs. We spend a great deal of time working, and we need to remember that the quality of our work directly influences every other area of our lives. In fact, if we “star” the non-negotiables, and begin to open our eyes only to those perfect-for-us opportunities, we will find ourselves fulfilling our ultimate purpose.
It might not look like we “think” it’s supposed to look – we might not achieve that dollar amount or the fame we expect or desire. We need to put away our expectations for ourselves and TRUST.
Putting something on paper in writing is very powerful. And then keep it out there in prayer.
